Many of the reviews for the deck that I read on Amazon complain about the non-illustrated pips, but that didn’t bother me. It is a book for the 21-century. This was the stage of humanity and our spirituality that she wanted to convey in this deck– representing a state of being when the numen is most palpably present. And wow. For me, the deck reads quite well, but I see how visual-spatial-right-brained readers are going to prefer the illustrated pips that you might find in other Gothic decks like the Dark Grimoire Tarot by Michele Penco also by Lo Scarabeo, or the Bohemian Gothic Tarot by Alex Ukolov and Karen Mahony, which sadly, is now out of print (I believe). He’s not surprised that this is happening. This symbolizes “the circular nature of time, [which] has been broken in order for a profound shift in development to begin.” The guidebook tells us that the Judgement card here is about something calling to us from “the abyss within to the infinite beyond.” The divinatory message here is to change and evolve. If you haven’t jumped onto the Lenormand bandwagon quite yet and you’re interested in learning a bit more about the system, I have a nutshell summary write-up from seven years ago, here (“The Lenormand: Nutshell Summary of the Petite Lenormand, from History to Practice“). This is a brand new deck mind you. Review: Benebell Wen’s ‘Your Inner Darkness and Inner Light Reading.’ This is an impartial review, I paid full price for the review and Benebell was not aware I planned to blog about it. I also like the moon phases iconography here, with the full moon on the Black Numen and the other moon phases, centering the quarter, on the White Numen. Of particular note is how she uses these colored circles over the crowns, beneath the palms or feet, or strategically placed corresponding to chakra points in the body. Sharing how animal symbolism plays out in this deck, the rooster in the Eight of Swords is chained to the figure, representing “the passage of time and untapped empowerment” (the guidebook). More importantly it’s not a huge dislocated work – it’s really well laid out and you could read it from beginning to end (if you’ve got a spare couple of months lol!) “An animal which could speak said: ‘Humanity is a prejudice of which we animals at least are free.’” (Nietzsche). The messages and affirmations in the accompanying Guidebook are empowering and I really mean it– it’s an extraordinary oracle deck [for someone not that into tarot] to consult everyday. I’ll be covering all three card sets. I’ve opted not to read with reversals when using this deck. If you’re plugged in to the online tarot community in any way, even minimally, then you’ve been hearing buzz about this deck. What a great review! She’s the real deal. She brings playfulness, kindness, and quirk to the world of cartomancy. I’ve already decided that this deck has become one of my go-to “workhorse” tarot decks (terminology I’ve stolen from Jenna Matlin over at Queen of Wands Tarot). In that sense, the Wild Unknown would work very well as a beginner’s deck, though such a beginner would have some work to do if she were to later try to learn the traditional Tarot de Marseille, Rider-Waite-Smith, or Thoth. These are decks that have been sent to me and for these types of collection showcases, I typically choose only from the decks sent to me for my collection. The light is illuminating from within, and emanating out. Two of my favorite things, together in one place! It’s the idealization and aspiration of humanity as animals because that’s when we are finally free of our prejudices. . That’s what happened with Benebell Wen, author of Holistic Tarot: An Integrative Approach to Using Tarot for Personal Growth. The Rosetta Tarot, published back in 2011, is a Thoth-based deck. The card feels competitive, aggressive, and the use of solid black in the negative space where the hands are versus the use of an ethereal white with wispy clouds where the sword’s blade is symbolic of a dual nature to this card, and that’s exactly what the card entry says in the guidebook– whosoever reaches out and grabs a hold of that sword will receive both a blessing and a curse. I’m intrigued by the strong opinions that tarot readers can hold for collaborative decks. From a compositional standpoint, Bento layers the imagery with seamless perfection. I was gifted the Witches Tarot, a deck created by Ellen Dugan and illustrated by Mark Evans. Swartz’s artwork seeks to express the esoteric dimension of flora and fauna, merging realism and surrealism, and you see that in the illustrations on The Wooden Tarot.
